GAY BOY lives his ex-pat life on the hunt for men in South Korea. He's an antihero, foul-mouthed, and up for it all...or is it all a front?
Gay Boy is the provocative account of some sort of gay man living some sort of life as an English Teacher in South Korea. He deals with cheating friends, behavior he detests, but this doesn't prevent him from sleeping with as many men as possible. To add to his list of first world problems, his mum won't stop calling and all the porn websites in Korea are blocked. At least the new guy at work wears skinny jeans to provide distraction, or not.
On the surface, Gay Boy may seem like a "typical" gay boy: highly sexed, sassy, and revelling in both. But when his vulnerability surfaces after a one-night stand, truths about his past are finally revealed.
GAY BOY appeared in the Dream Up Festival, New York and the Frigid Festival, New York and was directed by Ashley Wren Collins.
This is a staged reading of the show, written and performed by JD Stewart, and directed by Bex Bowsher.
JD Stewart Bio
JD Stewart is a gay playwright, TV writer, screenwriter, performer, and digital content creator from the Scottish Borders. He holds an MFA in Dramatic Writing from New York University and an MSc in Playwriting from The University of Edinburgh. His work includes: GAY BOY, ONE TWENTY-ONE, THE BIRTHDAY, ENGAGEMENT, FUNERAL PARTY, DANIEL GETTING MARRIED (dir. Kenny Miller, Play, Pie & a Pint 2022), THE DEVIL DRINKS CAVA (dir. Liam Rees, Play, Pie & a Pint 2023). JD was a member of the BBC Scottish Voices 2022 cohort and developed his screenwriting through NFTS and The Edinburgh International Film Festival. In 2024, JD wrote the original TV Pilot, GAZE, which was shortlisted for the 2023 BAFTA/Rocliffe Prize, in the Top 3% of submissions for the 2024 BBC Drama Room and received funding and pitch deck support from New Writing North. Currently, JD is creating a short film with the North East BFI Generator Program, titled ‘PINKFACE’ about straight casting in LGBTQ+ roles. Alongside Frazer Flintham he is co-creator of the UK LGBTQ+ history Podcast ‘The One Fifty Marchers.’ His work is spicy, fun, and loves to push buttons. JD is the New Work Producer at Live Theatre, Newcastle.
Bex Bowsher Bio
Bex Bowsher is an accomplished theatre director, playwright, and screenwriter based in the North of England. With a rich background in crafting words for performance, Bex fearlessly challenges societal norms through critically acclaimed plays. Bex was the Regional Theatre Young Director’s Scheme (RTYDS) 18-month Assistant Director in Residence placement with Live Theatre and Northern Stage, during which time she assisted on numerous plays and directed the critically acclaimed, sold-out "Love It If We Beat Them” by Rob Ward. Since the end of her RTYDS placement in 2023, Bex has worked with the RSC (37 Plays Project), Live Theatre (Three Acts of Love) and ARC Stockton (Unruly).
